Plan Mode and Claude Design: what Anthropic shipped this spring

Two Anthropic releases stood out in the last few weeks. Both change how Claude shows up in your day-to-day. Both are usable today by anyone on a Claude Pro plan or above. Here is the practical version of what each does.

Plan Mode: think before act

Plan Mode is the slash command (/plan) and persistent mode in Claude Code that asks Claude to plan a change before executing it. Instead of immediately editing files, Claude reads through the relevant code, identifies what it will touch, and presents a step-by-step plan you approve before any work happens.

Why this matters outside of code: the same pattern showed up in Notion Custom Agents in April, and is rolling out across the assistant ecosystem. The era of asking an AI to just do it is ending because plan-then-act produces dramatically fewer expensive mistakes. For your business, that is the difference between an agent that occasionally sends a customer a confusing reply and one that flags ambiguity and waits.

How to use it: if you or your team uses Claude Code to ship internal automations or small tools, default to Plan Mode for any non-trivial change. The 30 seconds you spend reviewing the plan saves the 30 minutes of cleanup when the agent guesses wrong. We have started using it on every customer engagement and it has materially cut rework.

Claude Design: prompt to prototype

Claude Design launched April 17 as an experimental product. You describe what you want — a one-pager, a slide deck, a landing page mockup, a prototype — and Claude builds it. You refine in plain English or with direct edits. You can export to Canva, PDF, PPTX, or standalone HTML, or share an internal URL within your organization.

The piece that matters: during onboarding it reads your codebase and design files to build a design system for your team. Every project after that uses your colors, typography, and components automatically. So it is not generating generic AI-design slop; it is generating designs that match your existing brand.

Where this lands for a Santa Barbara business

For most local businesses we work with, two shifts come out of these:

One — the next time you need a pitch deck, a service one-pager, or a quick prototype for a feature you are mulling, Claude Design probably gets you 80 percent there in 20 minutes. That is meaningfully cheaper than a Fiverr designer for early-stage work. Once it is dialed in, your team uses it without thinking.

Two — Plan Mode means it is now safe to let Claude touch more of your workflow without supervision. Any agent you build for your business should default to plan-then-act. That is the single biggest reliability upgrade you can make.
